At Trout Unlimited's Save Bristol Bay campaign, we have one goal: to mobilize American anglers and hunters to defend the largest remaining stronghold of Pacific wild salmon left in the world - the Bristol Bay region of Alaska. The proposed Pebble Mine, backed by Canadian company, Northern Dynasty Minerals, would be one of the world's largest open pit gold and copper mines in the heart of Bristol Bay's critical salmon spawning habitat and upstream of one of the world's premiere freshwater sportfishing destinations. The mine would require the storage of toxic tailings permanently in the headwaters of these rivers, which is simply a disaster waiting to happen. The mine risks the 14,000 American jobs and $1.5 billion in economic contributions that the sportfishing and commercial fishing industries of Bristol Bay provide, thanks to strong salmon runs.
