We're anticipating another busy spring in the effort to protect Bristol Bay from the Pebble Mine proposal. The company filed for one of their major mining permits last December. The application makes two things abundantly clear:
- Pebble cannot protect clean water and salmon in Bristol Bay while operating their mine. And worse...
- The current plan filed by the company is only phase one.
Allowing Pebble to move forward will result in Bristol Bay becoming an industrial mining district. We cannot let this happen.
Though we've spoken up dozens of times in the past, we need to continue to do so. Luckily, Alaska Governor Bill Walker has demonstrated opposition to the proposal, but it also remains clear that Pebble's permit review process will only be as stringent as the public demands.
Within the next month, we'll be entering the first of many public comment periods as Pebble's mining application is reviewed. We will contact you with ways you can make a difference. Please stay tuned and help spread the word that Alaskans' efforts are needed to protect Bristol Bay now more than ever.
